RQ3 Debriefing

There was plenty of talk about Rune Quest 4 at RQ3. Now that we've done three of these, with each one being a substantial learning experience, I'd like to solicit some feedback on what worked, what didn't work, what you'd like to see more of, and what you'd like to see less of in the future. The "top ten" lists help a bit, but I'd like to get everyone willing to just throw in their thoughts about what they liked and didn't like from each of the first three events.

I would like to determine:

1. Should we do another?
2. What should we keep?
3. What should we change?
4. What did people like?
5. What did people not like?
6. What would people like to try that would fit within the scope of such an event?

Thanks for your feedback!

would like to determine: 1.

would like to determine:

1. Should we do another?
I certainly hope so. I really enjoyed being able to play and I think you really have a good thing going.

If not, I would definately consider a joint venture with the GAC though we are planning (because we like our Free site) on being completely Dry in 2009 which might affect some peoples desire to go. GAC's will be having it's first organizational meeting this Saturday if anyone is interested, it is in Neenah and I'll give more information if needed. But this is about Rune Quest not GAC so I'll move on.

2. What should we keep? The attention to detail and costuming. Also the quality of your NPC's was very high. More then anything keep the fun attitude. I'm glad the ingame props were a little more battle friendly this year :)

3. What should we change? It was too linear. I had a blast role playing, but I really did not have the sense that my presence made a difference in what the over all outcome of the event would be. In most games, I like to think my actions make a difference. Just being given extra lives to keep me 'in the quest' was ok, but it was fairly arbitrary. It is a problem with Amtgard and how it deals with lives, I really though last year was cool where dieing lead to a second teir of role play as the Wraiths. When I saw the theme being Egyption I was hoping for something even cooler... would have been cool to become a mummy or something...well at least I had hopes :)

4. What did people like? I admit, the lack of stick jockery really made the weekend pleasant. Win or lose it was pretty freaking cool and even the one time someone had issues, they left the area, cooled down and came back. No one can be perfect all the time, but it is cool when it doesn't infect othes.

5. What did people not like? Obviously sometimes you just have to go linear but it is the one thing I generally dislike. I don't think anyone else had an issue with it though so it could just be me. I also understand the importance of finishing off a story... sometimes you just have to tie up loose ends.

6. What would people like to try that would fit within the scope of such an event? Looking at the idea that a 'three year' plot is a cool idea I look forward to getting involved as a player at the ground level. RuneQuest seemed to start at the epic level and had to fight each year to be bigger and better then the year before. I know both last year and this year I was just 'following the crowd' this year not nearly as bad as last. A plot that can bring everyone in would be cool.

Thanks for your feedback!

Your Welcome :)

1. Should we do

1. Should we do another?
Yes!

2. What should we keep?
Rune!

3. What should we change?
We should have the event staff arrive early. I suggest that they go Thursday, so they can set things up ahead of time. This way, the event staff will have more time to relax as well as have more time to prepare the event. Arriving on the same day as the people you are running the quest for just doesn't work for such a complex quest.

4. What did people like?
(I already posted my top ten)

5. What did people not like?
People that played one type of monster suddenly played another and the variations in garb were subtle at best. One or two costume changes should be all for the entire weekend - not a dozen.

6. What would people like to try that would fit within the scope of such an event?
Nonstop questing! Start Friday Night and quest all the way to Saturday Night. The only places off limits would be cars, tents and restrooms.

There is one thing for sure

There is one thing for sure that needs to be pointed out. I really want to thank the people that helped out with this event. There was an insane amount of work that was done by a small group of people. Fortunately, the costume part of it is taken care of for a long time to come. However, if an event is to occur again, it is an absolute necessity for more people to jump on-board much earlier in the game. It really reduces the stress and workload all-around.

I really wanted to see some more areas completely delegated to other people early on. If people are interested in doing one next year, we will need to make sure that it's a larger group of people involved. Costumes are out, but there will be food needs, logistics, monster coordination, plot development, first aid, car-pooling, advertising, reeves, gate, budgeting, and other things that need people to handle. Basically, I want people to know that there are more people to talk to than just me about stuff, since, come event time, it's hard to get good answers from someone who's pulled in several directions at once.

I don't mean to complain about it, because the event as a whole turned out very well. I just wanted to point out the imbalance with the hope that it can be prevented in the future.

I second that. I worked

I second that. I worked really hard. The last week before the event I was working about 5 hours a day on RQ stuff, I hardly got any sleep. By time the event came around, I wasn't awake enough to enjoy it and ended up sleeping through saturday's feast. I burned myself out so much this year I don't want to even do it again. And I'm not saying 'look at what I did' there was a group that worked really hard and a lot that did almost nothing but show up. Events can't sucessfully be run this way.

LOL. I did nothing but show

LOL. I did nothing but show up. I would like to help next year since I will be monstering. I think Shalashaska put in the most work. He lost his life so the rest of you may live.
