This poll has been up for a while and it definitely screams something about recruitment and player retention. Since some Frostlanders probably responded to the poll, my response goes to them as well.
Those of us willing to take the poll were nearly all brought to the world of Amtgardia by a friend. We all stuck with the game because we had friends in the game. I would argue that even the three votes that are not friend-related came from people who have friends in the game now.
When it comes to recruiting players, this poll tells me that we should encourage people to bring their friends. I have suggested in the past that we should do some 'bring a friend' days. These would be days that we are not going to have a boring meeting or play complex games that tend to turn away newer players that don't understand what is going on. I am declaring the next big 'bring a friend' day to be the Casbah Feast and our meeting at the Kress Center earlier that day. Both the Frostlands and ourselves should do some 'bring a friend' days as the spring unfolds as well.
When it comes to player retention, everyone needs a friend in the game. The players that don't stay aren't friends with other players. I encourage everyone to go out of their way to talk to a player you may not have talked to in the past. Or to talk with new players whenever possible. I am not saying you need to force yourselves to befriend someone (heck, I hate Morden, but I'll still talk to the filthy bastard), just give the friendship a chance. Now this is obviously more difficult for people that are introverts, but even introverts can bust out of their shell on 'bring a friend' day.
By the way Redesta, this was a great idea for a poll.
I was brought by a friend, but they didn't stick around because of some of the politics (those were dark days)and their negative experience (as well as others before them) has contaminated most of my core group of friends.
I agree whole heartedly that we need to get friends involved and do things to make the games friendly to new players.
It would be cool for a few Bring a Friend days/events. Will the Great Northern Battle be such an event? One of my issues with all the secrecy around how it will be run is my distrust of the unknown. I realize the Casbah feast is close at hand and with luck my concerns will be put to rest.

It will be an excellent Bring a Friend event. I am still working on how to make such a massive battle new player friendly. I think I have come up with a way, but I have to crunch some numbers.
I prefer to focus on one event at a time. There are many things going on between now and the Great Northern Battle. I know the basics will be finalized by the time of the Casbah Feast, but those are only the basics. It may seem like secrecy because there are still things being figured out.
