A Portal Through Time (working title)

What are some elements you'd like to see included from the first two Rune Quests? What would you like to see changed or eliminated? What new ideas would you like to see? We have heard some good feedback about the portal magic, music, wraiths, and other features, while I know there are things that we could and should probably change or add for RQ3. We have a "working list" based on what people have told us so far, but I'd like to see some more discussion on it.

The fireball isn't big enough untill we've burned down the forest!

For the last two Rune Quests

Jyotis Kadga's picture

For the last two Rune Quests we got a keg of beer to celebrate Saturday Night. For RQ3, we should make a giant wop. I will bring some booze, juice, fruit chunks and dry ice (hopefully). Anyone who wishes to join in will need to contribute some sort of booze.

Here's how it'll work: You must bring 750 milliliters of booze per person. It should be something that could be mixed with a fruit punch. I will check everything that gets dumped in and make enough fruit punch to correspond to the booze involved.

Interesting Scenarios

Jyotis Kadga's picture

I don't really know what you intend for the plot this year, but here are some interesting scenarios:

1. Make the questers carry something fragile, like a bag of eggs, while monsters are chasing and attacking them. The monsters might only swing for Subdue damage, but they could specifically target the fragile contents. The goal of the questers could be to get the magic eggs to Rune or to a crazy, tent-burning mage.

2. Go back in time to get something from a bunch of barbarians, perhaps the eggs. Roleplay that they cannot speak and that magic frightens them. Maybe, right as the questers work things out with the barbarians - a dinosaur attacks. The dino is so huge that regular attacks are meaningless, but any sort of fire may frighten it away. But on the same token, fire will frighten away the barbarians.

3. Another time period could include pirates. The boat battle could be made into a treasure hunt with a treasure map. Questers could go from island to island getting clues to help them follow the strangely-written map. All the while, pirates attack.

The one thing I noticed...

Ristil's picture

If you could arrange for another huge fireball inside of a tent, and put in a request for no thunderstorms, both of those would be great... :P

I thought the end battle was the most confusing. Especially at the beginning, people didn't really seem to get what was going on and what they were supposed to be doing. I don't know if it needed to be less complicated, or just explained better/differently. I have no suggestions on how to fix anything, just letting you know what I saw. I'm real helpful that way :P

I think Rune should have had

Troy's picture

I think Rune should have had a small map/visual on parchment explaining what to do with those lights at the end. I would love to see a light effect like that again though.

Parchment / map

I like it! I don't know why we didn't think of that before! It's so obvious, I guess it just slipped right past us. This is definitely going on the ideas list.

It rocked!

Redesta's picture

I thought it general RQ2 was awesome (not able to say anything about RQ1). The only thing I would change, and I know I told you already, would be more light. Preferrably of the non-flammable variety. Not that each scene should be well lit, but more safety lighting.

Night Battle

Jyotis Kadga's picture

I don't think there should be a big night battle. I said this before RQ2. Small skirmishes are one thing, but a big battle at night could be dangerous and/or confusing.

If you are thinking of another big night battle, you will need a ton of lighting for RQ3.

Also, will Rune be there?

Night battles

*IF* there is a night battle, it will be drastically different from the one at RQ2. I wasn't very happy with the way it went, even though it ended up turning out more or less okay once people understood what was going on. It was a learning experience, for sure.

More likely, though, any lighting effects like that would be incorporated into the Friday night quest. Hell, I have the electronics I made; why not find purposes for them in RQ3?

While it is my hope that Runemaker will be there, I haven't been able to confirm. He's finishing his masters degree program in spring, and I imagine his ability to attend will largely be dependent on what his job prospects look like. I just sent him an email inviting him to join the site, so maybe he can shed some light on his future plans.

Uhhh i think we're not weighing in the good with the bad. One (and if i say maybe the most awsome thing happened durring the thunderstorms) may I just say YEAH CRIMSON CIRCLE!!! Besides by getting rid of the thunder storms we may anger THOR

I kill because I care, now wheres my strong drink.

Yes thunderstorms sucked,

zodway's picture

Yes thunderstorms sucked, was kinda fun watching everyone try and make a break for the bathrooms, and the tents were hopeless also. We should maybe think of tarps for the sides of the big tent where everyone gathers at night/killer thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms

What if they're part of the plot?

I liked the Thunderstorm

I liked the rain, gave me a chance to get a few more people. When you can't control a something, best to learn how to make the best of it. Also if you plan ahead of time for what you'll notice bad weather rarely comes.

Definately have people in charge of having Fire Wood gathered supplied. It is a great task to give people who want to Help, but don't have alot of time prior to the event. I can't remember if the Camp Ground had rules about requiring you to buy their wood or not, but State law dictated wood must be gathered from no further then 50 miles from where it will be burned (at least in State Parks) so that is a good rule of thumb to use.

There is at least one disease (Oak Wilt) that I believe is found in Northern WI and not Southern, just a bit of trivia. Who ever ends up taking care of the wood issue can check the DNR and the Campground for more information.

I also suffered from Heat Sickness at the event, not that I blame any of you, but definately it underscores the importance of making sure Water is available. Any quest that goes more then an Hour, should have Water stops built into the program. It is easy when things are going really cool in a Quest for the players to forget what their bodies need.

I had fun, and look forward to RQ3

That's a good idea to have

That's a good idea to have water breaks and rest stops actually part of the quest.

Water

Jyotis Kadga's picture

At every event I have ever gone to, you bring your own water (or beer-if that's what quenches your thirst).

There is a huge tank of water at the campground though.

We are planning on using the same campground for RQ3, right!

There is a five gallon

Ristil's picture

There is a five gallon cooler thing with a spout on it in my garage that could be used for water, or that lovely orange drink from McDonald's. If you're interested...

water

Troy's picture

I dont think supplying water was the issue. It's remembering to drink. And since there is a huge tank of water right there, it should make it easy to turn it into a healing shrine.
Sheriff Shalashaska

Exactly

Exactly Right Shalashaska!!

I'll toss a word of caution out. Just because something has always been done before by others, does not make it 'right/good/the way it should be'.

Many avoid change, but it limits your ability to improve, and one might argue avoiding change defeats the purpose of any kind of fantasy environment.

Aha!!! Not sure how I ended

Aha!!!

Not sure how I ended up back in this thread, but thought I'd toss a comment in.

The one issue with 'Epic' style quests is that 95 percent of the characters end up just following someone else around. One may argue (and lets face it, Jyotis loves his arguments) that no matter the scale of the Quest most of the players just follow along wondering what is going on and swinging foam when ever they get the chance.... Still... If you want something to strive for, come up with a way that each character/player can feel both important to the plot, but also that they are not being pulled along by the noses.

It's a hard challenge, but gosh darned it, I'm looking forward to RQ 3.

Boboko

I'm looking forward to RQ3

Jyotis Kadga's picture

I'm looking forward to RQ3 as well!

It will be a hard challenge to involve players, but in many respects, players need to involve themselves. In epic games, players should feel free to roleplay with each other, not just with npc's. Technically everyone in Amtgard should have a persona. During quests, your persona should come to life.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone will strive to make RQ3 better than RQ and RQ2. My question is: Can it be better? In my opinion, RQ2 was only a little bit better than the first one. Don't get me wrong, both were awesome, but Rune Quest could be even better. The real problem is funds. The first two Rune Quests were short of funds due to the cost being a mere twenty bucks. Camping, an array of activities, props/costumes for the actual quest, and food all cost money. I urged others to raise the price of RQ2 to $25, but no one would have it. Due to inflation, the price will simply have to be $25 for RQ3, but again, I urge that we make it higher.

Why do I want it to cost more? Many people take off of work, dive many miles and put a ton of effort into the Rune Quests. After all of this, why are we so cheap when it comes to the actual event? To me, it feels cheap and it still always loses money. Now, I don't care if it makes money or not, but if I drive down and blow my whole weekend on an event - I want it to be worth it.

I plan on NOT going to RQ3 if it is less than $30!! I know this goes against the economic demand curve, but look at it from my perspective: I have to drive many miles and burn an entire weekend, so I want my travels and time to be worth it.

The budget will be reviewed

The budget will be reviewed several times as we get closer to summer and have a better idea of how big an event this is going to be. I think one thing anyone close to the event will agree is that it's hard to do something like The Rune Quest with less funding than we've been talking about. It has a higher proportion of food and prop expenses than any other event I've been to. However, now that we've begun discussions about fund-raisers, maybe we can keep the ticket price down, raise funds through other means, and have the same or even a larger budget.
