You have to consider, you

You have to consider, you are paying for a weekend of camping, 4 or 5 meals and endless entertainment. How much would it cost you to go camping on your own and bring your own food? Probably more than any of the amounts listed on the poll.

I know people enjoyed having

I know people enjoyed having all the meals for the weekend there and ready to go when you were hungry, but maybe then we cut a few out. Tell people to bring there own food for the first night and maybe into the the 2nd day and provide food after that point. When i was at RWMR half the fun at night was seeing what other people were cooking or eating.

I guess looking at that idea it would cost me 15 bucks to put a few meals together, but i would rather pay that for food that i cook/bring than food that is provided and pay 35$ for this event... its odd and i dont know why i feel that way.. but i do.

Maybe its just the avid camper in me.

In the forums, Jyotis

In the forums, Jyotis suggested that the event fee for RQ1 and RQ2 was too low, and, due to inflation and the desire to make RQ3 bigger and better, we will need a larger fee. You can see his other reasons in the RQ3 forums. To add to what he put there, though:

For each Rune Quest, I have contributed approximately $200 of my own money above and beyond what was collected for fees.

The first RQ had 26 in attendance (23 from CC). The second RQ had 38 in attendance (33 from CC).

The second one had a higher budget which gave us cooler effects, better food, and a lot more creative freedom.

The goal for next time is to grow to a 50-person event. If we budget for 43 people, as currently planned, that gives us an additional $100 budget, or about $100 less than the total budget for RQ2, given the money I put into it. Every $5 difference in price, at 43 people, is a $215 difference in the overall budget.

Whatever the ticket price, I still plan on personally spending about $150-200 on the event. This is my incentive to get more people to attend than planned, and it puts the money toward making the event cool instead of turning a profit.

Karina, my 13 year old

Karina, my 13 year old sister, called the other day wondering how much Rune Quest was going to cost. When I told her $25, she had a shocked sound to her voice and said "Thats it? I thought it was going to be a LOT more!". So now she's happy because both her and her boyfriend can afford to go.

Amtgarders are cheap skates.

Amtgarders are cheap skates. Even if it makes sense to charge more, people will look at the $5 or $10 increase in a pretty negative light. Personally I thought the $20.00 cost was a good deal last year. Not having to worry about food is something I really liked about the event. The Kabobs were awesome.

Having a Day Fee for people who do not want to stay the entire weekend will get more people through the door, and in my thought, that should be your goal. You have a cool event, but until people experience it, they won't know. Yes, having a day fee may mean a few people will just come for a 'day' (and more importantly only pay for a Day when they may have been willing to pay for the whole weekend) but it will also mean that several people who weren't willing to pay 20-30 for something they aren't sure they will enjoy will actually give the event a try.

Budget, always fun to deal with. But remember the value of Marketing for next year, make as many of your supplies as reuasable as possible, and invest in getting more people to the event year after year. Yes, it means a loss, but look to other ways to offset the costs. (Fund Raisers during the year and the like).

Ultimately, it will more depend on my job situation and less on what you charge in determining if I go. When making your final decision consider the cost of Marketing and how much you want the event to be about CC get together and having fun (since that wouldn't really require much consideration) and how much you want it to be a 'Large' event with many Parks represented.

I do like the fund-raiser

I do like the fund-raiser idea, though. It definitely would help with costs.

On the other hand, I hear

On the other hand, I hear Amtgarders talk about going out drinking and blowing similar amounts of money in a night without blinking, and I hear Amtgarders talk about the $60-80 video games they buy. You have a valid point, but I think I'd qualify it and say that Amtgarders are cheap about certain things, unless they perceive a value in it. Lord Jyotis can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think he's suggesting that we make it an event worthy of the gate fee, the time, and the effort put into it instead of just a race to get as many Amtgarders in one place as possible.

I guess I'm not fully convinced about the fees one way or another, but I definitely want to make it an event that would be worth the trip if someone from another state should decide to come.

You're right about the reuse of materials, too. We've made an effort to be conservative in our props, and intend to reuse what is appropriate. We have an ensemble of characters and garb to work with, and we have a really good feel from the first two of what our budget will look like.

As far as a "day fee" is concerned, I'm unconvinced of any value in it. I know some campgrounds offer that option, but I'm unaware of any other nearby Amtgard events doing it. I guess I'd like to see what successes have been had before I would go that way. GAC and RQ2 didn't have day fees, and both events seemed to do just fine.

yeah, Amtgarders are cheap

Ristil's picture

yeah, Amtgarders are cheap about events. I've never been to an event that cost more than $20. On the other hand, I have also never been to an event, besides RQ and SKBC (which is $25 this year), where all meals have been provided. Most only provide Saturday night feast, which really sucks when you come from far away and don't have access to a car. Also, I have mostly been to endreigns and war events, so nothing that required a lot of props. I would definitely be willing to pay the extra to be fed and have an awesome quest. I HATE being hungry at events.

I think 25 is a good price.

I think 25 is a good price. It is only a 5 dollar increase and given the fact that our two events (RQ3 and GAC) are two months appart this year (instead of 2 weeks) there will be more crossover. I know I have already put in for that weekend off and plan on going (and that probably means at least my wife as well).

Yay!! Party at my camp!! I'll bring the Sam Adams :)

Sounds like a Deal!!! I'm

Sounds like a Deal!!! I'm rather partial to Sam Adams.

I'll have to come up with something equally cool to provide.

With luck I can find a way for Siren to want to go... She's not much into the Flurby stuff. Is their a Shower on site? It is a low priority for me, but she likes it when I don't stink alot when I come to bed.
