Bow?![]() The rules say a bow can't be stronger than 35#. This is very depressing, because the bow I have is 40#. How much is a 35# bow? rougly, any guesses? |

I like that welsh shortbow, but its draw is too heavy... I wonder if they can make one with a 30-35# draw.
I dought it Morgan. It
I dought it Morgan. It doesnt list a seperate draw weight. In addition it's not really made for Amtgard. Amtgard arrows will reduce the range to about 5 yards (instead of the listed 15 yards or 45 feet). Amtgard arrows generally shorten the range to about a third actual (if not more). I believe it's the short draw length that will hinder the range.
You would be better off with some of what they call 'kid's bows'. They might be less powerful but because of the draw length will have a greater range. Im no expert but Jalea explained it to me why long bows have a longer range than a recurve of equal poundage. The draw lenght gives more 'push' to the arrow as it leaves the bow thus giving it more 'flight time'. Maybe someone else can put it in better terms.
I'd have to see the physics
I'd have to see the physics on that. Can anyone here show me the mathematical proof for this?
I got mine

Not too expensive. Doesn't too authentic, but gets the job done!
Ahh... what poundage is
Ahh... what poundage is that? I tried using one VERY similar and the plastic grip was too small. I know they can get up to the 35 lbs though (Fletcher I think has that exact bow).
I got my most recent bow from Shiells (sp?) at Fox Valley mall. It is a 35# break down recurve bow. It was 150 but comes with three arrows, a stringer, finger tab, quiver, arm protection, and shoots oh so nice.
As far as authentic looking, I wouldnt worry to much about that. I have only seen a handful of bows that are authentic looking and yet have seen hundreds threwout Amtgard.

The exact wording on the
The exact wording on the website (and the sticker on the bow) says "30-35 lbs." I don't know why the range, but still within Amtgard legality.
Im no expert but I believe
Im no expert but I believe the 30-35lbs is usually a combination of draw length and string length.

Also, since most battlegames
Also, since most battlegames have open battlefield rules on arrows and throwies, even if yours are "extra padded," you very well might pick up someone else's arrow that isn't and use it.
In general, it's good to just follow the rulebook verbatim. If a rule doesn't make sense, it doesn't matter because it's in the rulebook.
NO! NO! NO! NO! There is a
NO! NO! NO! NO! There is a reason for it being 35# max in the rule book. I will explain my reason for likening it, in the state of WI the minimum draw pounds is 30# for white tailed deer. And with a broadhead on that you can legally kill a deer during the season. So what happens when you use a 40# bow with old arrows/crappy arrows/arrows not made properly? If it cores on the person...guess what your going to the Emergency Room. So I found a 40# bow on my field, I would blow up. And i dont care if your arrows are "extra padded"

If you don't mind a short
If you don't mind a short bow, I found mine at Dunham's for $20 and it's pretty cool. Just ask for Jr Archery bows at Dunham's, Fleet Farm, or Dick's Sporting Goods. This isn't archery season, but who knows? You might get lucky.
You can sometimes find them
You can sometimes find them in garage sales for cheap, but for the most part your looking at an investment of $40 to $80 dollars depending on what you are looking for. You can go up to $250 if you want.
Woodbows.com is where I have my wooden long bow and I've been happy with it for over three years now. It was 75ish.
A number of people use classier recurves that generally run around 125 or so if you can get them on sale. I'm not a fan of them, they are more accurate but I like my long bow :)
The inexpensive plastic like recurves are fine though, they are accurage and may not quite have the same range as a higher end bow, but in truth, long range shots are going to be lower percentage anyway.
